Chicago Performs

  • Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago 220 East Chicago Avenue Chicago, IL, 60611 United States (map)

As part of Season 17, Red Clay Dance Company premieres a powerful new work during the MCA’s Chicago Performs—a four-day festival that highlights bold voices and groundbreaking performance from Chicago’s creative community.

Choreographed by Founding Artistic Director and CEO Vershawn Sanders-Ward, this immersive, evening-length work is a creative response to Freedom Square: The Black Girlhood Altar—a living altar honoring missing and murdered Black women and girls. The altar, created by A Long Walk Home artists Scheherazade Tillet and Robert Narciso, transforms public spaces into sites of remembrance and healing.

Red Clay Dance’s performance features its award-winning ensemble, a community cast of young dancers from Black Girls Dance, and original music by Jamila Woods. Blending dance, song, digital media, and built environment, the piece becomes a sanctuary for the stories of:
Rekia Boyd, Latasha Harlins, Ma’Khia Bryant, “Hope,” “Harmony,” Marcie Gerald, Lyniah Bell, and Breonna Taylor.

This premiere is presented as part of the MCA’s In Progress series and New Works Initiative.

Tickets and full festival details available via the MCA Chicago website.
